Arsenal prepare for the January sales. Goetze is the top target whilst Podolski is being monitored.

Emirates

Apologies for the lack of any content over the past two months. University work is, and has been piling in consistently, leaving me with little spare time to post about The Arsenal. Once work has stopped flying in the site will be running as normal, which should be around mid December (heads up in their).

Anyhow, onto the more pressing issues of Arsenal: As I’m sure you know already, Mario Goetze of Borussia Dortmund is our top target. We will have to smash our transfer record (£15million for Arshavin) to gain his services, but realistically Arsenal know unless we poach him in January, this summer we have no chance. Dortmund, understandably don’t want to sell, however as John Cross reported in the Mirror we are genuinely looking at a £30million bid in January. I know, shock horror.

We’ve also been following Lukas Podolski, currently of FC Cologne, though only if he is available for £10million – not the £20million many are reporting. It is ambiguous whether we are viewing him as back up to Van Persie for this year, or thinking more along the lines of a replacement, should Van Persie leave this Summer.

As I’ve got so much more work to do, I’ll leave it at that. I’ll post as much as I can in the next few weeks yet can’t promise anything. Till then, COME ON YOU REDS!

Arsenal summer transfer round up 2011: Arteta and Benayoun

Who we want at Arsenal

The window for 2011 is now closed. Arsenal have made 9 first team additions this year, 8 permanently, whilst Joel Campbell has gone on loan. The best signings will yet to be seen, however transfer deadline day proved to be hugely exciting, Arteta becoming the climax in the evening. Below, I’ve run the rule over Arteta and Benayoun:

Mikel Arteta
Signed in the last few hours of the window for £10million, on a 4 year deal – only after forcing through the move himself. He will wear the number 8 shirt, vacated by Nasri $asri, and will fill the void left by Cesc Fabregas. If he can stay fit, he could arguably be the star signing of the window. According to Opta stats “Only five players have created more chances per 90 mins in the Premier League since 06/07 than Mikel Arteta.” These players are / were Lampard, Nani, Malouda, Giggs and Fabregas – Fabregas, statistical the best with 3.5 chances per 90minutes. If he can keep these figures up and educate Ramsey and Fabregas, its been a very good deal indeed. You also have to bear in mind, he played in an Everton team which had far less of the ball than Arsenal. It’s also slightly funny he looks very similar to Fabregas in my view!

Yossi Benayoun
Signed on a one year loan from Chelsea. We had the option to buy him out right for £2million but refused, due to his injury record. He’s 31, so represents a very old head for Wenger to bring into the team, yet this doesn’t take away from his quality. He plays the same role that Arteta will and as neither player can play every game he will fill the role when need be. Both arguably could play in the same team, if we use the system with 1 defensive midfielder instead of two.

Overview on the two experienced heads

I believe the signings of Arteta and Benayoun will prove to be some of the best buys of the year. Even without direct influence on the pitch, they can really help mould and develop some of the players we have in our squad. Wilshere and Ramsey spring to mind instantly as direct benefactors from the moves. As well as this, the movement of Benayoun was described as amazing by Carlo Ancelotti, in the times when he axed Joe Cole for him. Such movement can be learnt from by all the squad: Walcott, Chamberlain and Ryo will definitely be aided. Only time will tell how good we have done, but both players have good PL experience and should slot in seamlessly to the team.

I’ll be back tomorrow for a round up of the two defensive signings, which will be then followed by the younger players. I’d also like to point out how accurate Arsenal Transfers were at highlighting our summer targets, in our post back in April.  A tad cocky, but we get enough stick when it’s wrong!

Benayoun and Arteta complete late deals for Arsenal

signing

With under half an hour left in the transfer window last night, Yossi Benayoun completed his year long loan from Chelsea, whilst Mikel Arteta signed for £10million on a 4 year contract, from Everton. The Benayoun deal was in place from around 18:30, once it was made clear Bellamy would be returning to Liverpool. We had the option to buy him for £2million, yet Wenger wasn’t convinced about his injury record. A year long loan seems good business.

Arteta proved the most frantic deal of deadline day: It was reported mid afternoon we had gone in hard for his services. After initial talks the deal appeared to be a goer, however, we then pulled out after his £90,000 a week wage demands, for a player also so injury prone. For around an hour the deal seemed dead. Then, to our amazement the player dropped his demands and after some ‘will he?’ ‘won’t he?’, Everton finally agreed to sell, with Arteta adamant he had to go. It was then just a case of getting all forms signed, which were and sending the all important fax off.

He said: “It is a big opportunity for me and my family and I think it is the right time for me to take it,”

“It is a big challenge, a different challenge, fresh for me and I want to see myself on the biggest stage, the Champions League.

“I am 29 years old so I haven’t got much time left to take a chance like this one. I think I have done my best for Everton.

“I always try hard, I have been as professional as I could and I was grateful for the support and the love that the club and the fans showed me.”

What a day. Many of the players will be on international duty this week, so we won’t see them for a while, but the new faces have cheered us all up, so let’s get back to winning ways, like we should! Come back to the site late afternoon for a more detailed round up of the players signed.

PS – I’m looking forward to our Fifa 12 team now!!
